Parliamentary groups
Parliamentary groups are units within the Bavarian State Parliament with their own rights and duties, in which Members of the State Parliament come together.
In its 18th electoral term (2018-2023), the Bavarian State Parliament has the following six parliamentary groups: CSU, Alliance 90/The Greens (BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN), Free Voters (FREIE WÄHLER), AfD, SPD and FDP.
The chairpersons of the parliamentary groups are as follows: Thomas Kreuzer (CSU), Katharina Schulze and Ludwig Hartmann (Alliance 90/The Greens), Florian Streibl (Free Voters), Florian von Brunn (SPD), Ulrich Singer (AfD), and Martin Hagen (FDP).

Under the rules of procedure, a parliamentary group must comprise at least five Members of Parliament. As a general rule, Members of Parliament who belong to the same party form one parliamentary group.
The parliamentary groups elect their chairpersons and executive body. The main role of parliamentary groups is political decision-making and policy development. They prepare opinions, develop items for discussion and determine the position of the parliamentary group on the committees and in the plenary sessions of the State Parliament. Parliamentary groups' legal status and funding is regulated in detail in the Bavarian Act on Parliamentary Groups [Bayerisches Fraktionsgesetz].
In the state parliamentary elections on 14 October 2018, six parties were elected to the State Parliament: At the start of the 18th electoral term (2018 to 2023), the Christian Social Union (CSU) had 85 Members of Parliament. After 3 Members left the parliamentary group, the CSU is now at 82 Members of Parliament. The Alliance 90/The Greens group has 38 Members of Parliament, the Free Voters 27, the AfD 17 (22 at the start of the 18th electoral term), the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) 21 (22 at the start of the 18th electoral term), and the FDP 12 (11 at the start of the 18th electoral term). Eight Members of Parliament are independent.
